How the numbers are made

Emissions are each energy source's yearly use from the building's latest Local Law 84 benchmarking filing times the Local Law 97 emissions factor for the period. The limit is floor area times the limit per square foot for the building's use. The penalty is the tons over the limit times $268. The 2030 to 2034 figures assume energy use does not change. The method page has every input and what the estimates leave out.

Limits of the data

  • Planning estimates, not determinations by the NYC Department of Buildings.
  • Only buildings in the property types we model, with enough data, are included. Buildings on the Article 321 pathway are left out.
  • Reporting year 2024. Filings can contain errors, and the file reflects what was filed.
