See the numbers
| Period | Emitted | Limit | Over | Penalty a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024–2029 | 2,592 | 2,538 | 54 | $14,497 |
| 2030–2034 | 1,512 | 1,359 | 153 | $41,106 |
Tons are tCO2e. Single occupancy group only. Mixed-use buildings add each use's limit. The 2030 electricity factor is not yet verified against the city rule.
The four steps
- Multiply each energy source's annual use by its emissions factor and add them up. That is emitted tCO2e.
- Multiply floor area by the limit per square foot for the occupancy group. That is the limit.
- Subtract the limit from emitted tCO2e. If the result is negative, there is no penalty.
- Multiply the overage by $268.
Worked example
A 300,000 sq ft office using 7.5 million kWh of electricity and 8 million kBtu of natural gas:
| Period | Emitted | Limit | Over | Penalty a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024–2029 | 2,592 | 2,538 | 54 | $14,497 |
| 2030–2034 | 1,512 | 1,359 | 153 | $41,106 |
